New Orleans is 1-0 in defensive of its world championship, winning a game that was more about defense and toughness than flash and flair of offense.
Drew Brees did throw for 237 yards on 23-of-36 passing. Brett Favre was held in check in the second half and finished 15-of-27 for 171 yards. Both had one TD pass. Not the kind of numbers you'd expect from two future hall of famers.
The Saints have a little more than a week to build on the win, as they play San Francisco a week from Monday night.
FOURTH QUARTER
1:49: Pierre Thomas gained 10 yards off left tackle, forcing Minnesota to take its final time out. Unless there's a turnover, the game should be over.
1:59: OK, at this stage in the game, the Vikings have one time out remaining and the Saints have it second-and-6.
2:30: This was the key play of the game. Drew Brees hit Devery Henderson -- the first one he has caught since his first quarter touchdown -- on third-and-7 for a 9-yard first down to stop the clock at 2:05.
5:40: A big stop for the Saints defense forces the Vikings to punt, with the ball downed at the 12 yard line. Minnesota can call time out two more times, so the Saints will need to get a couple first downs and try to force them to use those.
